Sonia Joshi is a writer, editor, and publishing professional originally from Northern Virginia. She graduated with her B.A. in English: Creative Writing and a minor in Digital Studies with Digital Games Narrative concentration in 2023 from the University of Mary Washington. It was at UMW that she discovered a love for publishing, specifically production and editorial, so she decided to continue her education at George Mason University, where she graduated in 2025 with a Graduate Certificate in Publishing Practice.
Sonia began her publishing journey in 2023, when she interned at the Rappahannock Review to help create Issue 10.2. She served on the poetry editorial team and as Lead Design Editor, inspiring her to further pursue editorial and production work. While completing her Graduate Certificate at GMU, she worked as a production and editorial intern for both Poetry Daily and Stillhouse Press. After graduating, she was asked to join the team of the now defunct Lodestar Lit to work as Lead Prose Editor and aid with cleaning up the site and its accessibility. She’s particularly passionate about publishing first-time writers and elevating unique voices, as she believes they often have the most interesting stories to tell.
Growing up in a mixed race family and just 30 minutes outside Washington, D.C. ensured she was constantly surrounded by vastly different stories, experiences, and ways of life, all of which inspired her to start writing. Through her work, she’s explored themes of bodily autonomy, chronic illnesses, gender and sexuality-based discrimination, abuse, and power imbalances. She primarily writes short-form body horror and enjoys challenging readers to question what the Human Experience really is. More recently, she’s started writing poetry again, though she still slips horrific elements into her works. She enjoys the connection and community writing promotes and hopes to help those lacking a voice feel seen.
